Proper choice of a suitable process is difficult, when one considers the large number of processes described in the literature for removal of sulphur compounds from waste gases. After grouping the various processes for general information, it is followed up by a comparison of several of those for the reduction of the sulphur content in waste gases from a 100 t/d sulphur recovery plant to a level below 500 ppm S (H//2S plus SO//2 plus COS plus C2//2 plus S). Only those processes producing a sulphurdioxide rich regeneration gas or elemental sulphur are considered here.
