Radiation effects in two-dimensonal crystals of (Cn H2n+NH3)2MCI4 with n=1,2,3 and M = Cd,Mn

The K2NiF4-like layer crystals of (CnH2n+1NH3)2MCl4 (n = 1,2,3; M = Cd, Mn) have been irradiated with X-rays and γ-rays at 77 K. From ESR and optical absorption spectra, it is found that a Cl2- molecule ion can be created in the layer of CdCl6 octahedra. A metallic luster much like a silver mirror has been observed in crystals which have been warmed to room temperature after irradiation at 77 K. The mechanism of metal precipitation is considered with the concept of color center formation and destruction.
