MECHANISM OF DEHYDRATION OF TERT-BUTYL ALCOHOL IN PHOSPHORIC ACID SOLUTIONS.

The kinetic regularities of dehydration of tert-butyl alcohol on deposited phosphoric acid catalyst were studied by the pulsed gas-chromatographic method. Dehydration rate constants at 70 degree C were determined in the range of H//3PO//4 concentrations of 50-80. 4 wt. %. A dehydration mechanism was proposed from the dependence of this constant on the acidity of the medium. This includes the formation of a reactive complex consisting of a molecule of an unprotonated alcohol, a molecule of undissociated H//3PO//4 and a molecule of water.
