The impact of a cyber-attack on the internet services is discussed. The fear is based on two core vulnerabilities within the internet, one concerning the border gateway protocol (BGP) and the second involves the domain name system (DNS). In the BGP protocol packets of data are routed through the Internet and the DNS translates Web addresses into their numeric equivalents so that the Internet can deliver its messages. The Internet's safety and stability rests in the hands of the entire technical community, with experts at all levels bearing the responsibility for seeing that things continue to run smoothly.
