The framework for nuclear decommissioning, which includes the decision to follow the 70 to 80 year safestore route, is based on extensive industry consultation. The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) and the regulators are working together closely in establishing decommissioning strategies for the future. The short term focus is to get on with clean up and demonstrate solutions to the legacy. The longer term desire to see new build is dependent on political and economic influences which will become more pressing when energy shortages supersede climate change on the political agenda.
