The aim of the study reported here was to understand the influence of a ferritizing heat treatment on the fatigue resistance of SG cast irons at low stress. Monitoring of the cracks revealed blockages at the grain joints to which the phenomenon of onset of the cracking is related. It was also found that the yield strength had a manifest effect on the fatigue life and that it was undoubtedly linked to the precipitation condition of the matrix, which could in consequence have a non-negligible effect on fatigue resistance.
