Owing to the variation of the rates of demand (from hour to hour and from day to day), the design capacity of equalization storage (for equalizing supply and demand) is normally determined from the projected hourly variations in consumption on the day of maximum water usage. With the wide availability of microcomputers, it is desirable to devise a procedure whereby the required storage capacity can be determined by entering the hourly consumption rates and pumping schedule only. Although the pumping schedule is usually not known a priori in actual operation, a simple way to overcome this problem is to assume a pumping schedule. Based on such an assumption, the paper presents a simple computer procedure for designing the equalization storage for a given set of hourly consumption rates and a specified pumping schedule.
