By examining the practice of steelmaking, the article describes the interesting background to the development of secondary steelmaking processes. Particular reference is made to the imaginative DH system and its rival, the RH process. The article also discusses other techniques including vacuum arc degassing and the special developments for stainless steelmaking such as the VOD and AOD process where outstanding advances have been made.
