According to the article, the reason these steels have not been a market success probably lies in the extra costs involved in the installation and operation of a vacuum degassing unit, expensive alloy additions, the relatively poor recovery/yield ratios with respect to additions during alloying and teeming, the expense in ingot cropping and scarfing, higher energy consumption due to higher slab reheating temperatures, tighter control required in hot rolling, higher energy costs on batch annealing due to the high annealing temperatures and long soak times, the bottle-neck situation at the dispatch end of batch annealing bays and the apparently poor surface of the product with certain grades.
