An extensive analysis of the calculation of the strain rate in the crack vicinity is presented for both static and dynamic loading. The numerical results presented for ABS-C and CSN 11523 steels show a steep strain rate gradient at the crack tip. Equations have been derived which give average values of the strain rate.
