Effect of cooling ribs on the solidification of junctions in castings

Tests were carried out to determine the cooling effect of thin ribs which were mounted on L- and T-junctions or were incorporated or cocast as solid cooling bodies. It was found that, owing to the cooling effect of the ribs, a possible hot crack formation can be prevented and shrinkage at the junctions can be reduced or eliminated. An aluminum alloy served as the casting material.
