A standard apparatus at the All-Union Technical Physics and Electronic Research Institute in Russia, is intended to reproduce thermal radiation flux (TRF) densities in the range 1-10**3 kw/m**2. A basic unit is the radiation detector, which measures the flux density and transmits the unit to working means of measurement. There are some difficulties in designing the TRF detector for high flux densities. Only small temperature differences are allowable at the sensing component, while the sensitivity must be high and must be uniform over the receiving surface. These difficulties have been largely overcome in the proposed detector which is described.
