On the basis of their own studies, the authors have formulated a ″lipid-mitochondrial″ hypothesis regarding the role played by excessive accumulation (in the lungs, in coniophages, and in the body as a whole) of free fatty acids and of their source material (lipids) in the mechanism of death of coniophages, which is the first and central element in the development of silicosis.
