The operational network of the Berlin underground railroad lines has been extended to 100 km within 75 years. Growing power and energy demand of the multiple units called for an increasingly higher installed power level in substations with smaller distances. The economical and operational use as well as staff problems required the development of automation and remote control. A description is given, from the historical, technical and economical point of view, of the development from the very beginning of remote control to the operating control center installed according to the most modern technical aspects.
