A boundary value problem of unsteady heat conduction is considered for the case of the cooling of a casting at a slow rate in the presence radiative heat transfer between the mold and the surrounding medium. A solution is obtained which describes the temperature field of a thin-walled mold. In addition, an equation is obtained for calculating the time required for solidification of the casting. On the basis of these, an analysis is made of the effect of the reduced thickness of the casting and the thickness and initial temperature of the mold on the quantity of heat radiated by the mold.
