Contribution to the Formation of Shrinkage Microcavities in Unalloyed Steel Castings Taking into Account the Solidifying Conditions.

The effect of molding materials, such as chromium magnesite/dolomite, fireclay, quartz sand, chromite, and corundum, on the formation of the directed columnar zone is investigated. A relationship has been found between the depth of the directed columnar zone and thermal diffusivity, and between the macrostructure microcavity frequency. The effect of hydrogen inclusions in steel, particularly on microcavity frequency in regions of V-segregation, is discussed. Measures for prevention of shrinkage microcavities in steel castings are proposed.
