Crosslinked polyethylene (XLPE) has a certain thermal overload capacity. Whether this can be utilized in cables, depends on the other components of the XLPE cables and the accessories. It is pointed out that for mixed networks, one must investigate whether the paper-insulated cables have a corresponding reserve. It would be favorable, if the required improvements of the individual components of the XLPE-cables in view of the overload capacity would also show other advantages including cost benefits.
