A recent correlation for solvent activities in polymer solutions is extended in scope to provide a methodology for modeling nonideal effects in polymer solutions. This new method allows the use of any expression for the residual (enthalpic) interaction between polymer and solvent in conjunction with a standard (Flory-Huggins) expression for the combinatorial entropy. An empirical free volume correcton uses the infinite dilution weight fraction activity coefficient of the solvent as an adjustable parameter. The new method is applied using one residual term given by the analytical solution of groups (ASOG) technique, one similar to the Flory-Huggins interaction term, and one which yields no residual interaction.
