RECOVERY OF ALUMINUM HYDROXY SULFATE FROM ALUMINUM SULFATE SOLUTION BY HIGH-TEMPERATURE HYDROLYSIS.

The Bureau of Mines is investigating sulfuric acid (H//2SO//4) leaching procedures for the recovery of alumina from domestic aluminous materials. Crystalline, insoluble aluminum hydroxy sulfate left bracket Al(OH)SO//4 right bracket was produced. Eighty-six percent of a solution containing 127 g of Al//2(SO//4)//3 per liter and 76 pct of a solution containing 336 g of Al//2(SO//4)//3 per liter were hydrolyzed by autoclaving for 1 hr at 320 degree and rapidly quenching to room temperature. The yeild of aluminum increased with increasing temperature and decreasing Al//2(SO//4)//3 concentration.
