The polymer content and thus raw material costs of white masterbatches on the basis of titanium dioxide can be reduced by the addition of calcium carbonate as filler. Polyethylene films produced with white masterbatches of different composition show with increasing chalk content poorer product characteristics; this regards impact strength, brightness, opacity and coefficient of friction. Film producers should consider carefully, if savings of raw material costs by substituting polyethylene through chalk are justified if poorer film quality is to be expected.
