Viability in the marketplace gives an indication of the current degree of cost effectiveness for P/M parts. In some situations, a new part possesses rather substantial potentials for cost reduction, performance improvement, or a combination of these, and its success as a P/M part is easy to predict. In most situations, cost effectiveness is more difficult to establish. In these cases, small cost advantages must be carefully developed from a re-examination of the basic design and function aspects and production economics.
