BUILDING SAFETY - A NEW EDUCATIONAL APPROACH.

The State of Indiana has one of the most advanced building safety programs in the United States. This program employs a very sophisticated organization for the review of plans for new construction, for the inspection of projects while they are under construction and for the granting of occupancy permits after the construction has been completed. In addition to all these ongoing checks, the state has adopted a complete set of rules and regulations which clearly state the requirements for new construction and also, in very specific terms, who is ultimately responsible for the enforcement of these rules and regulations. The Department of Education and Information has joined with the Department of Building Construction and Contracting at Purdue University to create instruction modules that will be available throughout the State of Indiana. This will be a grass roots program, one designed to meet the needs of the new building officials, builders and developers, as well as seasoned design professionals.
