Sweet cheese whey was concentrated using hyperfiltration systems equipped with tubular membranes. For these experiments a one stage recirculation system and a single-pass (once-through) system were used. A mathematical model, fitted to the experimental results, enabled local permeate fluxes at different operating conditions, such as pressure, flow-velocity and concentration to be predicted. In this work, an economic evaluation is carried out, using the mathematical model, in which the two system types are optimized for minimum permeate cost.
