Data on the solubilities of SO//2 and HCl in S//2Cl//2, which are lacking in the literature, are needed for selection of the removal conditions of SO//2 and HCl from gaseous mixtures during production of sulfur dichloride oxide (thionyl chloride, SC1//2O) by the cyclic process. The purpose of removal of SO//2 and HCl from the circulating gaseous mixture is to raise the yield of SCl//2O and the output capacity of the reactor. In order to obtain data on the solubilities of SO//2 and HCl in S//2Cl//2, the authors saturated the solvent with pure SO//2 or HCl in a thermostated vessel at 273. 2 K. The experimental data, evaluated by the least-squares method, are presented. The results were used in the development of a cyclic process for production of SCl//2O from S//2Cl//2, SO//2, and Cl//2, in which the gaseous mixture is treated to remove SO//2 and HCl after leaving the synthesis reactor. After dissolution of SO//2 in S//2Cl//2 it is desorbed and returned together with the original reaction mixture into the reactor for SCl//2O synthesis, whereby a higher degree of SO//2 utilization is achieved.
