Surface species of 1,2-epoxypropane adsorbed on various metal oxides have been studied by infrared spectroscopy. It was found that MgO, TiO//2, alumina, and silica-alumina produced two types of alkoxide species by scission of the alpha -bond (O-CH) or beta -bond (O-CH//2) of 1,2-epoxypropane at rather low temperature. At higher temperature carboxylate species and polymer are present predominantly. A limiting number of sites on metal oxides participates in isomerization of epoxypropane.
