A simulation model of a cluster mill which accurately estimates the shape of the strip being rolled was developed, clarifying the effects of control methods on the shape of the strip. Especially in the cold rolling of hard, thin material, it was found that the optimization of the first intermediate roll profile together with the crown control of backup rolls was very effective in obtaining good strip shape. Also, since the thermal crown of the rolls greatly changes the strip shape in the initial stages of rolling, shape control during this initial stage is very important.
