摘要
By guiding light in an optical fiber, the threshold for nonlinear optical effects is reduced by many orders of magnitude. The special properties of fibers become important for devices such as Raman lasers, for the limits imposed on fiber transmission, and for the physics of nonlinear optics. Recent attention has focused on the role of group-velocity dispersion on the propagation of short pulses which has led to optical pulse compression and optical solitons.
