The extrusion department at the IKV conducted a detailed process analysis on a rubber extruder as an initial step towards providing aids for the manufacturers of rubber processing machines and rubber processors. Working on the basis of this process analysis, it was possible to develop a model, which allows for the very first time quantitative statements to be made about the process (i. e. extrusion of rubber). Thus the mass temperature development and the pressure build-up along the screw can be determined by simulation calculations. This gives the processor the opportunity to optimize his point of operation. The machine constructor, for his part, is now in a position to estimate the operating behavior of the machine, even before it is built and tried out, by running through a few calculations.
