X-ray crystallographic analysis and resistivity measurement during continuous heating were used to study the influence of the rate and method of cooling on the propensity for metastable crystalline and amorphous phases to form in the core of a microwire. The order in which the intermediate metastable phases appear during the transition to equilibrium is established and it is found that a new silico-carbide forms in the core of a cast microwire.
