N-(4-methylphenyl)-3-oxobutanamide is shown to be a selective and sensitive gravimetric reagent for beryllium(II). The precipitate is dried at 105-110 degree C to constant weight and weighed as Be left bracket C//1//1H//1//2NO//2 right bracket //2. Beryllium in amounts less than 3 mg can be determined in the pH range 9. 0-9. 8; the relative standard deviation is plus or minus 0. 25%. When disodium-EDTA is used as a masking agent, beryllium can be determined in the presence of Fe(III), Mn(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Cr(III), Zn(II), Cu(II), Cd(II), Hg(II), V(IV), Al(III), Mg(II), Ca(II), Pb(II), Ce(III), As(III), Th(IV), TiO**2** plus and Uo//2**2** plus . Anions like WO//4**2** minus , Mo//7O//2//4**6**+31,AsO//4**3** minus , BO//3**3** minus , SCN** +31,SO//4**2**+31,F** minus , Cl** minus , tartrate, ascorbate and thioglycollate have no influence on the determination. The proposed method has been used successfully for determination of beryllium in beryllium ore.
