The problems of information retrieval are normally associated with large computers, large disk files, and very large amounts of information. Our purpose here is to describe an information retrieval system constructed for an unusual application, related to word processing systems, in which the primary goal is to implement the entire system (program plus data) in as small an amount of memory space as possible. It may be reasonably expected that this type of information retrieval system will become increasingly important as microcomputer systems become more commonly used.
