Low-frequency vibration effects on coarse particle filtration

Results from an experimental investigation of the development of cake resistance during filtration assisted by vibration are presented and the vibration conditions that lead to improved filtration rates are identified. It is shown that vibration is a possible technique to increase the rate of filtration. However, a critical acceleration that is dependent on the vibration frequency and solids mass in the cake must be exceeded for filtration to be enhanced, otherwise the rate of filtration is slowed. Changes in the visual structure of the cake with vibration acceleration are described and related to changes in the cake resistance. © 2002, Hosokawa Powder Technology Foundation.
