The selective removal of H//2S from a low pressure gas mixture containing 0. 4-2. 0% H//2S and 8-40% CO//2 was carried out successfully, with a maximum selectivity of 0. 955. Solutions of methyl diethanolamine (MDEA) in concentrations of 20 to 60% were used to absorb the acid gases in these experiments. The optimum operating conditions to yield maximum absorption of H//2S with minimum absorption of CO//2 were determined. A special contactor, different from conventional absorption columns, which results in a lower energy consumption for the pumping and regeneration of the absorbing solution, was employed. The work was carried out with an aim of finding an effective solvent for natural gas sweetening.
