The United States has a very extensive oil shale reserve. Even excluding the vast marine shale deposits of Alaska and the southeastern United States, the reserves of the Green River Formation of Colorado, Utah and Wyoming alone are equivalent to an oil resource of at least two trillion barrels. Nevertheless, the science and technology of oil shale have been neglected due to the availability of petroleum and the ease of its refining. This book marks the first systematic monograph on this topic published in the United States within the last five decades. A number of oil shale experts have contributed to this volume which consists of 15 chapters. Furthermore, two major companies in the oil shale industry have unveiled their processes in this book, and the only governmental research center on oil shale also contributed three important papers.
