- [38] For years, our township has been taking mixed yard trimmings (brush, leaves, grass clippings) from curbside collection to a county facility for grinding and composting. Now the county will not accept mixed trimmings. They claim that the leaves and grass do not need grinding and these materials create mush in the hammer chamber which accelerates hammer wear. Plus they say the grass causes odor problems. Is there any truth to this? I feel that the grass would act as a lubricant in the grinder and that the odors are due to the materials sitting at the grinding facility for too long before they are processed. It would be too costly for us to have separate collections for brush and leaves/grass. BIOCYCLE, 1999, 40 (10) : 13 - 14
