Development of plasma transferred arc hard facing on titanium alloys using a new wear-resistant titanium alloy

Titanium alloys have not been applied to the sliding parts of machines because of the lack of wear resistance. In this study, a technology of PTA hard facing on titanium alloy using carbide dispersed wear resistant titanium alloy powders has been developed. PTA hard faceability using Ti-6 Al-4 V + W2C and Ti-6 Al-4 V + Cr3C2 alloy powders is excellent. Hard facing metals without defects are formed by these powders. Hardness and toughness of hard facing metals of these alloys are equivalent to those of Stellite. These hard facing metals show better wear resistance than Stellite. It is thought that wear resistance is improved by crystallized TiC particles in a ductile βTi matrix.
