Controlling the pouring of aluminum alloys for improved quality of castings

A couple of years ago, the applicability of an effective automatic pouring system for ferrous metals, based on a laser sensor, was directed toward the improved casting of aluminum alloys. The laser sensor system, Selcom SLS 500, is designed to measure aluminum levels in launders, molds and headboxes. With computer or PLC controlled systems, the system prevents improper level control during filling of the mold, thereby avoiding ingot cracking and/or break out of liquid metal from the core.
