An expanding number of disk drive products is presented. Various types of disk memory systems are described, with floppy-disk units leading the way. However the floppy-disk drives inceasingly reflect the characteristics of rigid disk drive techniques. The application of a laser to align the head assembly is one of them. In addition, to provide primary system storage floppy-disks often serve as back-up devices for rigid-disk products. All come in many sizes and a variety of design configurations. A sampling of disk-drive controllers, a glossary of disk-drive terms and the basics of magnetic heads are furnished, and various features of floppy-disk and hard-disk drives are presented and their performance discussed.
