The buoyancy effects on laminar forced convective flow and heat transfer over a horizontal flat plate were studied as a fundamental problem of mixed convective flow. The enhancement of heat transfer rate was recognized experimentally, and was clarified in relating with the appearance of thermal instability induced by buoyant force. Comparisons were made between theoretical instability results and onset of vortex rolls which were observed by using a direct flow-visualization technique.
