Catastrophic oxidation of Zr-Ti alloys in the temperature range 600-1200 degree , as in the case of oxidation of Hf-Ti alloys, is explained by the fact that during oxidation of alloys in the beta -condition, oxygen dissolved in the surface layer stabilizes the alpha -phase. At a certain concentration beta - alpha -polymorphic transformation commences, accompanied by disintegration of the lattice. This facilitates a rapid shift of the oxygen front into the body of the alloy, and assists transfer of titanium to the scale.
