In Sumitomo Metal Industries, Ltd. 160 process computer systems using Japanese minicomputers had been used on all processes from upper process to lower process. But for lack of exchange, there were big problems in productivity and maintainability of software. For these problems working on Japanese minicomputer makers, a standard of process computer systems which use Intel's microcomputer and multibus was decided. Several years ago, we began to manufacture small process computer systems by ourselves, in 1985 succeeded in developing the FA systems which were networked by 6-10 microcomputers, and in February, 1986, established a new company (SMI Control Engineering Co. ) which manufactures process control systems using microcomputers.
