Multistep single-way modulation schemes for digital PCM/FDM and audio/FDM conversion are described which, in their modulators, require only multiplications by plus 1, minus 1, and 0. Attention is paid to a 60-channel system in which five individual 12-channel groups are digitally generated and combined to form a basic secondary group in the standardized 312 to 552 kHz range. Solutions for a 12-channel system are discussed. Aspects relating to the possible use of wave digital filters are pointed out. Out-band signaling can easily be accommodated. The schemes are also suitable for use with switched-capacitor filters.
