The investigation for and design of the access roads for the first phase of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project posed numerous difficulties that had to be overcome. The geometric and pavement design deviated from normal South African practice in order to account for the topography, climate and construction schedule. This article highlights some of the above aspects.
