Incineration, microbial detoxification, chemical treatment are some of the approaches being taken as industry searches for efficient, safe treatment and disposal options. From the 1984 RCRA amendments, to the 1986 Superfund amendments with emphasis on innovative technology, Congress has indicated a preference for treatment, destruction and decontamination over short- or long-term land storage. This article reviews some of the new technologies under development; from initial success in the laboratory to full-scale operations.
