Cardinal Aluminum has used a power-and-free conveyor system in its bid to expand its facility for powder coating aluminum extrusions. This manufacturer of high-end light aluminum extrusions had a problem on how to move 26-ft-long loads gently, over a complex path and through numerous and varied operations. Interfacing with the operators in the load/unload area while completely automating the operation further complicated the problem. Cardinal has chosen the power-and-free system which operate on the principle of two parallel tracks or rails. One track supports a continuous running power chain, and the second track provides guidance and support for the load-bearing trolleys. The load-bearing trolleys may be selectively engaged or disengaged from the power chain to move in a non-synchronous fashion or to stop in an automatic accumulation mode. The conveyor also offers a diagonal banking capability and the ability to withstand oven temperatures over 400°F. Special system accessories are developed to facilitate handling of the extrusion racks.
