The castability of steels is assessed using the Olivier grille test piece, considered better suited than the spiral test piece formerly used to characterize the possibility of complete filling and fidelity of a casting because it takes into account not only the properties of the metal and of the mold but also the casting shape factor. A castability index is defined on the basis of the results obtained with this test piece. The castability of eight very different grades of cast steels is compared by using this method to measure the castability index of each grade versus the superheat temperature.
