A survey of various gear configurations to accomodate the diversified conditions imposed by a gas turbine plant in ships or locomotives, is presented. The gas turbine is a compact, single-shaft machine similar to a medium speed diesel engine and, as a result, affords greater flexibility in gear configuration. This may be the reason why gears for gas-turbine powered vessels more closely resemble gear arrangements for diesel powered ships.
