EFFECT OF DIAMOND DRESSING OF ABRASIVE WHEELS IN THE PRESENCE OF COOLANT ON GRINDING EFFICIENCY.

The effect of the method of feeding coolant into the dressing zone in dressing abrasive wheels on the efficiency of the grinding process in grinding 45 steel billets is studied. Various diamond dressing tools are used, e. g. , needles, pencils, and rollers. It is shown that the greater the surface of contact l//k the more significant is the action of sludge on the wheel working surface. Of the tools tested, the maximum contact area was obtained with a diamond pencil. In dressing with this type of tool the combined method of coolant feed thus has the maximum effect, and ensures a considerable increase in the flow of liquid through the dressing zone compared with free falling coolant, and also effective removal of sludge, which results in better preservation of the abrasive grain cutting edges.
