A fifth-order model of a synchronous machine is considered. Is is based on the hypothesis that the three mutual inductances between stator, field and damper windings along the direct axis, expressed in per unit values, are equal. With special reference to sudden short-circuit test, the proposed correct approach to the determination of model parameters shows that it is not necessary either to express the conventional parameters in terms of model parameters, or to use approximate expressions. This new proposed approach is justified by the greater precision in the determination of conventional parameters from tests using minicomputers to record test data points and to analyze them with algorithms for optimization of non-linear functions.
