The paper gives a brief account of the design and construction of the 665. 5-m long bridge across the Kali river, near Karwar in Karnataka. Spans up to 122m have been adopted utilizing cast in situ segmental cantilever construction with a hinge at the center of the span. Details of pneumatic sinking for well foundations have been given. The bridge has two-lane carriage-ways of 7. 5m and 1. 55m wide footpaths on either side. There are a total of 8 spans of which four are mid-spans of 120m each, two penultimate spans of 69. 5 each and two ultimate spans of 19. 5 each. Caisson foundations for the mid spans consist of wells of 10. 65m diameter above maximum scour level (MSL) and 11m diameter below MSL with a steining thickness of 1. 35m above MSL and 1. 525 below MSL. The foundations of all the piers go right down to rock level which is found at depths of 12. 0m and 24. 5m below the mean tide level. The bridge is designed with a grade to give a minimum clearance of 9. 15m for navigational traffic and also to minimize cutting into hard rock on the Sadashivgad side.
